Deciding between novelty and practical straws for your bachelorette party? We break down the trade-offs and give clear rules to help you choose.
Quick Answer
Choose novelty straws like the Willy Straws Assorted 9-Pack when your priority is humor and ice-breaking, but switch to practical straws if you need durability for heavy use or expect spill-prone drinks.
Novelty Straws: Humor That Breaks the Ice
Novelty straws are designed to make people laugh and start conversations. They work especially well at bachelorette parties where the guest of honor wants a playful, memorable vibe. The Willy Straws Assorted 9-Pack, for example, adds a cheeky twist that suits both male and female guests, making it a versatile icebreaker.
However, novelty straws are often less durable than standard straws. They may not hold up well with thick smoothies or repeated stirring, and some designs are more about looks than function. If your drinks are mostly simple cocktails or sodas, they're fine, but for heavy use or messy drinks, you might want a backup.
Practical Straws: Reliability Over Laughs
Practical straws—like standard plastic or reusable options—are built for function. They handle hot, cold, and thick drinks without bending or breaking, and they're often more cost-effective when you're buying in bulk for a large group.
The trade-off is that they don't add any party flair. If you're hosting a themed event where the straws are part of the decoration, practical straws might feel too plain. You can always dress them up with drink tags or themed holders, but that adds extra work and cost.
Mixing Both: The Best of Both Worlds
You don't have to pick just one. Consider using novelty straws as party favors that guests can take home, while providing practical straws at the drink station for actual use. This way, you get the laughs and the functionality without compromise.
This approach also works well if you have a mix of drink types—use practical straws for cocktails and reserve novelty straws for photo ops or toasting moments.
Decision Rules for Choosing Straws
- If you want maximum laughs and photo moments: Choose novelty straws like the Willy Straws Assorted 9-Pack. They're perfect for themed parties where humor is the main goal. Order at least one pack per 4-6 guests to ensure everyone gets one.
- If you need straws for heavy drinking and messy cocktails: Go with practical, durable straws that can handle thick drinks and frequent stirring without bending or breaking. Buy a few extra packs of practical straws as backups.
- If you're on a tight budget: Practical straws are usually cheaper per unit, especially in bulk. Novelty straws cost more for the novelty factor. Compare per-straw prices before committing to a large order.
- If you want both fun and function: Use novelty straws as party favors and practical straws at the drink station. This covers both needs without compromise. Label the favor straws so guests know they're take-home items.
